Physics Demonstration VideosOn April, 3rd, 2009 several students participated in demonstrations of science during our semester astronomy openhouse. The Department of Physics would like to thank Jen Hunter for filming our first demonstration event. Warning - These demonstrations are potentially dangerous, and niether Emory University nor The Department of Physics reccomends enacting these demonstrations on your own. In other words, don't try these at home.
Rocket Board
Given a fire extinguisher, a skateboard, and a helmet, Kazem from Emory University's physics department demonstrates the principle underlying rocket propulsion.
Faraday Cannon
Using an electrified coil, Gary magnetizes the metal rod and surrounding ring. Because they generate like magnetic poles, they repel each other and the ring shoots into the air.
Liquid Nitrogen
Julie demonstrates some of the properties of supercooled oxygen by chilling balloon animals in liquid nitrogen.
Crushed Cans
Jason crushes cans using pressure differences created by heating the can (and contents), sealing it and then rapidly cooling it, generating a vacuum.
