PHYSICS 503A: Classical Mechanics I

Content: A deeper mathematical and philosophical treatment of classical mechanics, which will also provide experience in reasoning from fundamental principles, and familiarity with some important mathematical techniques. Topics to be covered include vector analysis; conservation laws; rocket motion; central forces and planetary motion; rotations; oscillating systems; scattering problems; variational principles; Lagrangians; and relativistic kinematics.

Prerequisite: Physics 152 and Mathmatics 211, or consent of instructor.


PHYSICS 503B: Classical Mechanics II
Hentschel MWF 9:35 AM - 10:25 AM MAX: 10

Content:Calculus of variations, Lagrangian and Hamiltonian mechanics, symmetry principles, motion in a central potential, scattering theory, theory of nonlinear and parametric oscillations, kinematics and dynamics of rigid body motion, the dynamic equations of motion of a rigid body, non-inertial frames of reference, canonical transformations.


PHYSICS 544: Advanced Laboratory

Content:Modern experimental techniques and hands-on laboratory projects, including semiconductor device physics, chaos in electronics, X-ray crystallography, and astronomical photometry.

Prerequisite: Physics 253 AND consent of the instructor.

Particulars: Each student will complete written reports for at least three experimental projects. All students must register for both T 2:30-5:30 and W 2:30-5:30.
