Melting and Frustration in Temperature-Sensitive Colloids

I will discuss experiments from my lab which employ colloidal particles whose diameters can be tuned by varying temperature. This extra degree of freedom permits easy variation of sample volume fraction and hence control of particle interactions and phase behavior. Experiments exploring melting mechanisms of one- and three- dimensional crystals will be described, and colloidal analogs to frustrated antiferromagnets will be introduced.
