Phys436S: Computational Physics (with Java)

Text: Introduction to Computer Simulation Methods (3nd ed), by Harvey Gould and Jan Tobochnik, (Addison-Wesley, 2006).
Required: A recent installation of Java, no matter which operating system.
Class: Individually, once a week, by appointment.
Grading: Weekly Reading and Exercises (50%), Term Project (50%).

Exercises: (find a directory tree with programs/libraries here)

Week 1: Read Chaps. 1-2, do some exercises for practice.
Week 2: Read Chap. 3 (including Appendix!) and do Probs. 3.1, 3.9, and 3.14.
Week 3: Read Chap. 4 and do Probs. 4.1, 4.3, 4.5, 4.10, 4.15, and 4.16.
Week 4: Easy: Read Chap. 5 (5.10 not required) and do Probs. 5.1, 5.2, 5.4, and 5.6.
Harder (start early!): Do Project 5.19, due in Week 5. (All initial conditions given in the problem are indeed correct as given!)
