  • Scanning Tunneling Microscope

We are currently building a UHV variable-temperature/cryogenic scanning tunneling microscope with an additional capability to separately analyze surface-specific electronic properties of materials, and study electronic correlations at surfaces. The operation of the microscope relies on a novel "earth-warm" driving mechanism which is expected to provide unprecedented mechanical stability of the instrument. The microscope is operated via open-code software enabling the implementation of our new measurement technique. See progress photos (as of 02.14.13) below STM STM scanning head
