Computers

PC and Mac platforms are currently used in the laboratory. Computers that are not instrument-dedicated are located in laboratory work areas and in a separate office room adjacent to the laboratory. Computers include five Pentium IV (3.1-3.6 GHz) and three Pentium III PC's, and Macintosh G4 and G5 computers.

The Warncke Laboratory also uses the PC cluster in the Emerson Center for Scientific Computation at Emory.

Information Technology Support

The Department of Physics staff includes three information technology staff specialists, with expertise in Microsoft, Linux and Mac operating systems and network services.

Machine and Electronics Shops

The Department of Physics at Emory University has a complete machine shop with two staff machinists and an electronics shop with one staff technician. Service and most materials are free of charge to the Physics faculty. The excellence of the shop staff is one the Department's greatest assets.

Biochemical-Chemical

Warncke Laboratory. The Warncke laboratory has a 330 sq ft wet lab adjacent to the spectroscopy lab space. The wet lab includes a large stock of chemicals and biochemicals, a fume hood, an incubator/shaker, french pressure cell, vacuum (Schlenk) line, reach-in refrigerator, centrifuge, pH meters, balances, sonicators and other biochemical amenities, as well as house-deionized and "nanopure" water. We have plans to acquire an HPLC system and a fermenter in the near future.

Molecular Biophysics Group. In addition, members of the Molecular Biophysics Group share the "Biophysics Preparation Room". This room contains an EG&G/PAR potentiostat/galvanostat for electrochemical measurements, Sorvall RC5B centrifuge with GSA and SS-34 rotors, refrigerator, a Schlenk line, pH meters, balances, a laboratory oven, a 5x4x3 cubic foot sliding-door "reach-in" refrigerator that contains a fraction collector and HPLC system, and a glove box (VAC HE-493] with pressure controller and oxygen analyzer.

The combination of the above facilities allows the execution of essentially all biochemical procedures necessary to prepare and manipulate samples for the spectroscopic studies.

Department of Chemistry. The Department of Chemistry, in the Atwood Building, is across the street from the Mathematics & Science Center. See the Department of Chemistry Facilities pages for description of facilities available in the Department of Chemistry.
