Dr. Justin Burton and collaborators uncover the source of glacial earthquakes
Researchers from Emory University, Columbia University, and the University of Michigan in the U.S. have teamed up with Swansea, Sheffield, and Newcastle Universities in the U.K. to understand the slow, seismic rumblings coming from many of Greenland's outlet glaciers. Dr. Justin Burton (Emory Physics) led the laboratory portion of the study that used scaled-down experiments to determine the forces causing the quakes, which result in the entire glacier moving backwards for at least 10 minutes.
Their findings were published in the journal Science on June 25th, 2015 (doi: 10.1126/science.aab0460).
