Bachelor of Science in Physics

Program description

The Bachelor of Science in Physics is a concentrated program for students planning on graduate education in physics or engineering. B.S. Physics students continue to learn and apply higher-level mathematics throughout their program, and are required and encouraged to begin doing research as early in their programs as possible.

Schedule for freshman start

Fall Spring
Freshman Math 112

Physics 151
Calculus II*

General Physics I, with Lab

Math 212

Physics 152
Differential Equations

General Physics II, with Lab
Sophomore Math 211P

Physics 253
Multivariable Calculus

Modern Physics, with Lab

Physics 461
Introduction to Quantum
Mechanics, I
Junior Physics 320

Physics 361

Methods

Analytical
Mechanics I
Physics 365

Physics Elective**
Electromagnetic Fields I

Senior Physics 421

Physics 444WR
Thermal Physics

Advanced Undergraduate Lab

Physics 432

Physics Elective**
Principles of Optics, with Lab

Students who do not have AP credit for Calclus I should see the director of undergraduate studies for advising on an alternate schedule.

**  B.S. Physics majors must complete 2 physics electives at their own convenience. One can be any physics course on or above the 200-level and one must be on or above the 300-level. One of these electives could be a senior Honors thesis.

Important:
All physics courses are offered only once a year—either in the Fall or Spring semester—with these exceptions: Physics 115 and 116 are offered both Fall and Spring semesters. Physics 311S and 312S are offered in the Spring in alternate years.

B.S. Physics degree students are encouraged to become involved in departmental research as early as possible in their programs. See the director of undergraduate studies for details.
