Physics Night! |
 | Join the Students for Physics Society(SPS) for its annual Physics Night program. This program invites Emory students to come and hear members of the Physics faculty talk about the research that is being done in the department. This event provides undergraduates an opportunity to learn more about Physics research and how they may can become a part of the exciting things happening in Physics! Please join us at 6:00 pm in MSC E208. The talks will be followed by food, games and wonderful fall treats. All majors are invited!

Welcome Back!
The Physics Department welcomed back its faculty, staff, students and guests at its annual Welcome Back Reception Friday, August 28th. Guests were introduced to the new graduate students by Dr. Laura Finzi. Dr. Kurt Warncke introduced the new faculty member and provided a brief update on the state of the department.

Orientation Begins!
Saturday, August 22nd marked the beginning of orientation at Emory University. Emory University welcomed 1,315 freshmen to campus. These students represented 45 states and 22 different countries. Fall 2009 also marked the beginning of a new advising program PACE (Pre-Major Advising Connections) for incoming students. As part of this program peer advisers work with the students during the pre-registration period and provide some suuport throughout the year. Pearl Young and Kate Rohald, physics majors, serve as peer advisers for the department.

Undergraduate Summer Research
This summer ten undergraduates were provided an opportunity to work with several faculty members research labs. Six of the students were part of the SURE program and presented their research at a Poster session at the end of the summer. A research project in experimental or theoretical physics that is performed in one of the laboratories in the Department of Physics offers the opportunity to see how the "textbook" knowledge that you are learning in class is applied in the pursuit of new physical understanding, and the circumstances under which new insights are gained. There are two parallel goals for undergraduate research. One is for you to acquire training in experimental or theoretical approaches of physics research that will benefit a future career in the sciences. The other is to work on a novel research project that may reveal new information about how a physical system works.

Congratulations to our 2008 - 2009 Graduates!
This year's graduating class is noteworthy in many ways, and the Department is justifiably proud of each one. Seven students will graduate this spring and their interests are as varied as the opportunities that await them. Many are headed off to graduate school in Physics, Engineering, and Medicine; while others will be joining the ranks of the working class.
Please join me in wishing our 2009 Graduates: Nate Ennist, Ryan Jones, Paul Liebesny, Jennifer Lynch, Zach Nadler, Andy Pahner and Katie Sharp all the best. We will miss you all. Thanks for the memories!

Society of Physics Students to host Annual Spring Picnic
On April 28th, the Students for Physics Society hosted the departments' annual spring picnic. There was lots of food, fun and families at this year's event. The highlights of the picnic was the recognition of retiring faculty member Bob Coleman and the induction of the Sigma Pi Sigma honorees. Many thanks to all those who helped with the festivities and we look forward to next year's celebration.

Congratulations to the 2009 Sigma Pi Sigma Invitees
Sigma Pi Sigma is the national physics honor society created in 1921 to recognize outstanding scholarship in the field. This spring we were honored to induct the following Physics majors into the Honor Society. The inductees were Pearl Young, Cara Hageman, Brian Kesler, Tatsuya Oishi, and Phillip Andreae. Congratulations to the newest members of Emory's Sigma Pi Sigma chapter.

Physics Honors Presentations
Any physics major with a cumulative average of 3.5 at the end of his or her first three years is invited by the department to work toward honors in any of the five undergraduate degree programs.
In most cases, the honors program in physics consists of a research project and thesis. The original of each honors thesis is deposited in the Woodruff Library. The Department also displays bound copies of all successfully completed honors theses in its own library. This years Honors presenters are:
Nathan Ennist (BS, 09) Advisor: Dr. Kurt Warncke
Paul Liebesney (BS,09) Advisor: Dr. Laura Finzi
Jennifer Lynch (BS, 09) Advisor: Dr. Eric Weeks
Zachary Nadler (BS, 09) Advisor: Dr. Eric Weeks

Physics Undergraduates present their research at Spring Professional Meetings
Every year the APS annual meetings draw more than 12,000 of the top scientists involved in physics research and education from throughout the world. The March Meeting offers a valuable opportunity for one-to-one interaction with physicists from industry, universities, and both private and government laboratories.
This year Emory University was represented by three of our undergraduates. Pearl Young (BS, 10), Jennifer Lynch (BS, 09), and Zachary Nadler (BS 09) presented talks at the APS (American Physical Society) March Meeting held this year, March 16th - 20th, in Pittsburgh, PA.
Ryan Jones (BS 09) was invited to give a talk at the Materials Research Society 2009 Spring Meeting. The 2009 Materials Research Society Spring Meeting will be held April 13-17 in San Francisco, California. The scientific sessions will include many new and developing areas of materials research as well as some well-established and popular topics. Topics in the electronic and optical materials symposia include amorphous and polycrystalline silicon thin films, molecular and organic electronics, chemical and mechanical planarization, multiferroics, high-throughput synthesis, as well as topics important to the integrated circuit community including junctions, memories, gate stacks, interconnects, and packaging.
