Theodore Sturgeon (1918-1985) was one of America's finest writers. Kurt Vonnegut called him "a master storyteller." Samuel R. Delany went further calling him "the American short-story writer." And James Blish wrote that Sturgeon was the "finest conscious artist science fiction ever produced." One of the great figures of the Golden Age of sf, Sturgeon went on to write over 200 stories, several novels, film and tv scripts (including two of the most famous episodes of the original "Star Trek"), plays, and dozens of non-fiction reviews and essays. His many literary awards include the Hugo, the Nebula, and the International Fantasy Award.
The Theodore Sturgeon Literary Trust is working to assure that all of the writing of one of the masters of American fiction is once again in print and available to fans, scholars and other readers. A major step toward this goal is The Complete Stories of Theodore Sturgeon, a multivolume set of books being published by North Atlantic Books. Volumes I - X are published. The volumes include careful story notes by series editor Paul Williams. These fascinating notes comprise a running biography of Ted Sturgeon and his writing process.
In addition to the Complete Stories project, Vintage Books is in the process of publishing Sturgeon's major novels. So far they've released More than Human, To Marry Medusa, The Dreaming Jewels, Some of Your Blood, and Venus Plus X. Thus we are approaching our goal of making all of Ted's work accessible as they never have been before.

Volume Twelve of The Complete Stories of Theodore Sturgeon has been delivered to North Atlantic Books and will be published in October 2009. The volume is titled after the Hugo and Nebula award-winning story "Slow Sculpture" and has an introduction by Connie Willis and an afterword by Spider Robinson (about the story "Pruzy's Pot"). The stories in Volume 12 were written between 1970 and 1972, with the exception of The [Widget], the [Wadget] and Boff" (1954) and an unpublished story, "The Beholders" (1964). The story editor for the series, Paul Williams, was too ill to participate, and so the Story Notes for this volume were written by Noël Sturgeon, Sturgeon's daughter and the trustee of his literary estate. Volume 13, which will be the last volume in the series, will be titled "Why Dolphins Don't Bite" and should appear in October, 2010. |
